I’m going to put up mixes from time to time that I don’t think are that easy to track down. I thought I would start with the Sarcastic disco chief DJ Harvey and his essential mix from 1998.
Apologies the recording is a bit rough, I think it must be rip from tape and at one point you get a few seconds of another radio station playing something awful – hold tight London – and you of course get Pete Tong talking essential mix style, we continue, but it’s a great mix to show Harvey was on top of this whole scene ten years ago. The Vangelis track at the start, Let it happen, was remixed by Lindstrom for his Late Night Tales compilation and even the original sounds like something straight out of Full Pupp. What I really like about this whole cosmic, disco, Balearic scene is that it’s as much about the rediscovery old records as finding new ones.
Anyway onto DJ Harvey. The guy digs deep into the crates, being incredibly eclectic but also making sense of all the different sounds from italio disco to hair rock to deep house. People obsess over his track listings, his re-edit vinyl releases, the fantastically named Black Cock series, go for a fortune on EBay as do copies of his limited edition and now legendary Sarcastic mix CD. Harvey has said he would rather not play a record in a set unless he believes the lyrics on it, this guy takes djing very seriously and consistently does his own thing. Be it remixing on the fly via reel to reel tape deck’s just like they used to do it back in the day, or hosting perfectly conceived club nights at his own art gallery/club space in Hawaii, Harvey just does things a bit differently than other dj’s.
Here is a good bio on Harvey from Francois k’s Deep Space NYC site.
and a interview with Harvey from his Red Bull Music Academy master class
