This time tomorrow…

Perhaps the world can be divided into those who like Wes Anderson films and those who think they are contrived exercises in style, or just don’t like them. He certainly seems to have divided opinion. Though getting better reviews than his previous film The Life Aquatic, Wes Anderson’s Darjeeling Limited still seems a quirk too far for many.

I really look forward to each of his films, he might only make films that inhabit a retro world of his creation, one populated by privileged characters with father’s that are either shit or have fucked off but he does it with enough style humour and a fantastic soundtrack to always keep me entertained. The frequent appearance of Bill Murray in some form in his films neatly balances out the sometimes annoying presence of Owen Wilson and his ensemble casts always give a real depth to the many characters that populate his stories. Taking as much inspiration from the page as the screen Anderson’s films aim to be the best novel you will never read. Much like Tarantino he has created a cinematic world very much his own and so easily becomes a target for derision, but if Wes Anderson doesn’t make Wes Anderson films who else will? I think give the guy some slack, thank the gods of film he is not another Michael Bay and long may he continue to make films with quirky characters, six thousand dollar belts, custom addias, great songs and Bill Murray.

What Cat Stevens was to Rushmore, Van Morrison to The Royal Tenenbaums, Bowie to The Life Aquatic the Kinks are to the Darjeeling Limited. Here is This Time Tomorrow from their spectacularly titled album Lola versus Powerman and the Moneygoround, Part One.
