Staying firmly in geek nostalgia territory, it's quite comfortable here, I finally saw the transformers movie recently, as its been out for months I can't save you the price of a cinema ticket so I’m not even going try to review it, rather make a nostalgic tribute to the other Transformers film 1986’s Transformers: The Animated Movie , the only film that features the talents of Orson Welles, Leonard Nimroy and Eric Idle, together, pop quiz fans. I remember film critic Barry Norman when reviewing the film saying Orson Welles, voice of the robot planet Unicron in the film, was the only actor in Hollywood physically big enough to play a planet. he also directed the greatest film ever made of course!
The film has more fun going on in five minutes than Michael Bay’s film manages in it’s whole length. His muscle beach pumped up robots might look great but the Transformers (2007) film puts the humans centre place and you never get an idea of the characters. That was the best thing about the toys they all had different characteristics, personality goes a long way with giant robots and as a kid watching Optimus Prime check out in the animated film there were tears in my eyes. The big guy was the chief of the Autobots he couldn’t die! It would be like that Potter kid dieing half way through one of his book’s or maybe JC in that other bestseller. Ah such sadness…
As the transformers movie was such a big thing in my life when it was released the soundtrack had to be purchased as well. The tape was played to death and my favourite by far was the films theme song “the Touch” by Stan Bush, even though 80’s hair rock is starting to become ironically cool in some quarters this song has no redeeming qualities other than anthemic nostalgia which puts it high up on my guilty pleasures playlist! Check out the video below with a into from a big haired American kid and a early CG Optimus. If for nostalgia sake you would like a copy of the video you can get it here from Transformers fan site www.seibertron.com,
the song was brilliantly used by P. T. Anderson in Boogie Nights as Dirk Diggler tries to launch a singing career. Im not sure which one is more funnier.
